Alcatraz Island; California, United States

In addition to being haunted, Alcatraz Island is also one of the most haunted places in America. Originally built in 1859, Alcatraz was declared a federal penitentiary in 1934. For years, Alcatraz held some of the world’s most notorious criminals, as well as crime scenes including prison escapes, suicides, and murders of prison staff, which might explain why so many people get frightened when inside. There are all the usual signs of paranormal activity in the former prison. There is also a history of traditional ghosts in chains making raucous noises at night, alongside their usual wailing and moaning. A report from a D-block inmate describing seeing red eyes in his cell is one of the most chilling. It was all night long of screaming – but in the morning, he was dead and completely alone, strangled to death.

Aokigahara Forest, Japan

This Japanese forest, also called Suicide Forest, is situated at the foot of Mount Fuji. In the forest, more than 500 suicides have been reported since the 1950s, according to the BBC. Others say it is because of underground iron deposits that interfere with compasses, causing people to become lost. Similarly, Japanese mythology links the forest with demons. It is unknown what evil spirits lurk within.

The Forbidden City; Beijing, China

You might not have known that this imperial palace is also known as a paranormal hotspot despite its popularity as a tourist attraction. There have been plenty of poisonings and executions at this location when it was being used as a palace. There have been numerous reports of ghost sightings in the palace since it opened to the public in the 1940s – among them was a sobbing woman dressed in white who wandered around the structure.

Mexico’s Island of Dolls, the Isla de las Munecas

This haunted location is not for those who are easily scared. The Mexican island of Las Munecas, also known as the Island of the Dolls, was never meant for tourists. Don Julian Santana Barrera, the caretaker of the island, found a girl mysteriously drowned there. The man found a doll near the river and assumed it belonged to her, so he hung it on the tree as a tribute. It is evident that the girl’s spirit haunted him after that, and he hung more dolls in an effort to please her. According to people, the dolls now possess their own spirits. A website on the island claims that some people have heard the dolls whispering to one another.

Poveglia Island; Venice, Italy

Venice’s Poveglia Island has seen some dark days after once being a plague quarantine station and a mental hospital. The site has attracted ghost hunters and paranormal investigators from across the country due to the number of deaths and evil activities that have occurred on the island.
