The Top Fashion Trends of the Fall 2021 Season

The Top Fashion Trends of the Fall 2021 Season

In a vacuum, designers worked in extremely unusual conditions to cater to a new audience, changing their lives forever – and eventually showed their collections virtually or in very intimate settings. However, creativity prevailed. With fall 2021, the collections embraced après-ski life outdoors, previewed for the Roaring ’20s, focused on LBDs for stability, and kept comfort a key ingredient for elevated knitwear.

The latest trends for next season are here, and you can shop key pieces for your wardrobe now.

A Little Off Color

Saturated shades are now in the conversation. This color play is slightly off-kilter, skewed, and unexpected like life itself. Beige meets lemon at Jil Sander, bubblegum pink and marigold at Miu Miu, rust and lavender at Patou, complementary and secondary hues mixed and muddled in the same palette. That’ll make you take a second look.

Sequins (She’s A Rich Girl)

How does it look to layer sequins on top of sequins on top? Definitely the kind of opulence of the 1920s that puts a girl in a good mood in the 1980s. There’s glimmering, but it’s covered up (These don’t club dresses, they are mood statements) – Think voluminous dresses, long trousers, high necks, and jackets. DrDried Van Noten, Paco Rabanne, Valentino, Loewe, and many others skipped minimalism and went for optimism and grandiosity with a clear message: Let your light shine, ladies, and the future looks brilliant.

Knit Wits

If there is one thing we can learn from the year 2020, it is that people always choose comfort when given the choice. It’s cake time! Instead, let them wear skirts, maxi dresses, and two-piece sets that are made from luxe knitwear. It doesn’t have to be boring when Gabriela Hearst, Altuzarra, and Proenza Schouler use cashmere and wools in body-conscious silhouettes that are eternally flattering and fit for an evening at home or on the town.

Après-Ski

Wear a Fair Isle knit that begs for a weekend in Aspen or Gstaad. Whether they’re cropped or cardi styles, these cozy knits will make you look great. Designed for skiing in and out, this sweater is the perfect casual outfit. Maybe it’s a way to honor the inherent nature of socially distant slopes or a way to embrace a mass exodus into the country. The latest fashion predictions from Miu Miu, Chanel, Balenciaga, and Junya Watanabe have all pointed to cozy ski sweaters being big next season.

Tailored on Tailored

Tailoring is in vogue now. It looks smart in no uncertain terms. Fashion designers don’t give up – button-downs are worn under vests, over turtlenecks, over jackets, under long coats, over trousers, and sometimes with ties and belts. Loafers and boyish shoes are paired with these ensembles instead of pumps or sneakers. Basically, this isn’t about subverting classic pieces; it’s a literal interpretation. There’s a huge market for layered tailoring for ladies who like to layer it once, then again, and again. Tory Burch, The Row, Prada, and Peter Do are the leaders.

Roaring ’20s Redux

If you believe that a new Roaring ’20s is on the horizon, you’ll be perfectly dressed for the occasion. The classic lace and silk of Khaite and Kwaidan Editions are featured in flapper dresses. Among the more modern iterations are Kim Jones’s Fendi and Gabriela Hearst’s Chloé. At Miu Miu and Paco Rabanne, these nightie-inspired dresses are layered under long coats while at Coach, they’re grunge-infused with a ’90s edge.

Crop Rotation

In addition, cropped jackets and tops are the new silhouettes making all the heads turn. These aren’t your childhood mini tees; these are elegant and midriff-baring. The elegant and chic look of Chanel’s fuchsia pantsuit or Peter Do’s menswear style with a twist, among other looks, and of Emilia Wickstead’s ladylike two-piece set is only for the posh.

Keep it Cozy

In the last year, cozy was the right word to describe fashion. Designers will continue down this path for fall 2021, but it won’t be as you might initially think — yep, no sweats required. Whether it’s a cream-colored wool jacket at Chanel, a tan shearling-lined coat at Chloé, or a fuzzy hoodie at Christian Dior, our favorite brands have refined these comfortable styles into couture looks. Though the fabrics may be plush and size large, the silhouettes take the form of a much more tapered silhouette than what is typically associated with winterwear. There is no better way to feel cozy than this.

Puff, Puff, Pass

In recent years, puffer coats have been growing in popularity. This season’s puffers will come in bold colors like purple or red. At Marni, they are deep purple, while at Dolce & Gabbana they are red leopard. You’ll have your pick and stay warm all season long with these stylish down pieces – whether you like them in neutral extra-long versions at Rick Owens or on a Victorian-inspired gown at Thom Browne.

Finding Patterns

The future holds many bright potentials, and it is ready to capture attention. It is fashion designers who are bringing the message to you. Many collections featured wonderful prints at Louis Vuitton in the past few seasons, from Thebe Magugu to Simone Rocha to Nicolas Ghesquière. For instance, Magugu references mysticism through the pattern of a sleek suit; Ghesquière interprets a Louvre painting, and Rocha goes for Baroque in romantic florals. The fall is the perfect time to break free of gray and neutral tones and let some color into your life.

The Suit Coat

Introducing a new version of the trusted suit. This style of dress traditionally consists of a blazer-and-trouser combination; however, skirts and blazers have also become popular. The designers included coats in their fall 2021 collections. The main focus was on palazzo trousers, paper-bag waist trousers, flared or cropped trousers with elongated toppers, rather than fitted jackets. Available at Givenchy, Jason Wu, and more, the pants were all paired with elongated toppers. Vaccination centers are now open so we welcome this look with open arms, it’s meant to be worn outdoors and fully appreciated.

Make It Midi

There is a long-standing fashion theory: Long styles indicate recessions, while high hemlines denote prosperity. 2020 was a precarious time, and the latter was overwhelmingly the case. Towards that end, midi skirts dominated the fall 2021 look books and virtual presentations as a testament to this credo. A box pleated dress from Christian Dior, knife-pleated at Erdem, an A-lined dress from The Row, and a flowy dress from Partow all have the same length between the knee and ankle.

Back to Black

The LBD is eternal; no matter how many times we proclaim that black is back, it will never go out of style. They aren’t leaving and won’t be. In reality, it’s the proportion that changes. It comes in both long, appliquéd styles and prim, unadorned styles during some seasons. Among the hottest trends for fall 2021 are short and fitted tops. Sultry minis are all the rage. There’s no rule of thumb when it comes to showing legs for days, darling, whether you’re wearing an evening tuxedo dress at Fashion East or a babydoll silhouette at Christian Dior.
